"Just Be nice"
After feedback from our teacher, we got the final draft of the video all done. We sent it to the resource teacher along with the parents of the student, in order to get permission before sending the video out to the schools. After about a week of waiting, we are still waiting on the approval from both the teacher and the parents. Once we get the feedback, we will take in those suggestions and touch up the video. End of Quarter SummaryAs this quarter ends, I am going to continue this project. I have study hall in the next two quarters, and will have the time to make the videos. I feel as though this project would not be complete if I wrapped it up without releasing of one video. My goal is to continue to make and improve the interview and video process. My goal at the beginning of this project was to spread awareness and that can't be established without even sending out an actual video. What I've learned so farI underestimated the amount of time that would go into this process. While some parts of the process were fast, others put the process on hold. The hard part has been that when the process is on hold, we have to just wait until we get permission. I understand and respect the getting permission and feedback; however, I thought the video progress would be faster. I'm not disappointed by any means, because I've learned a lot about life. Because, in life, sometimes plans are put on hold. Plans may take longer than first anticipated, and that's okay. Sometimes you have to work hard and wait for the results.
Once this first video being released, I'm excited to figure out how to become more efficient in the video series process along with improving the quality of the message in the videos. I am hoping to try to incorporate more the message that just because people learn differently doesn't mean they are any less of a person.

It took about two weeks to finish editing out the first video. This took so long because of a couple reasons. First, we waited a week to edit, merely because we were making cards for teacher appreciation week. Once we got to editing, we wanted to make sure that the video is what we wanted. We ran into a conflict of not knowing how to put it together. After talking it through, we figured a video of us all talking and explaining our intent before the interview would be most fitting. We had a couple days where we weren't all here, but we finally got the introduction of us taped and filmed. After filming and editing clips, I added subtitles since it was hard to hear at times. I just have to run the video by both the resource teacher and the parents of the student that was interviewed. Once it is okayed, the video will be ready to be sent out and shared.
Continuing on, for our next video we are hoping to do a disability awareness video for disability awareness week, and possibly having this be of more than one student with less of an interview feel. With the help of our resource teacher sending home permission slips and emailing them to her virtual students, we had four signed permission slips. Enough to get started! Starting The VideosWith the help of our teacher, we have the privilege to use a very nice camera in order to interview. The day before we started the interviews, we went into the storage room (the home of the camera) in order to do a practice run. After getting a tutorial of how to use it from our teacher, we figured it out. At first, it took us a while in order to hear the sound. After about four practice clips, we figured realized we had to videotape and transfer it to I Movie. After uploading, we had to move the volume of the bar all the way up.
The next day, we headed down to the resource room in order to interview each student. This process was awkward at moments. We tried to talk more from script and found out that having more of an improve conversation may work better! We are working on editing the videos now in order to come up with our first video. Once we get it edited, I am going to send it to the parent's of those we interviewed to make sure they ok it before sending it out. This disability awareness project sprung upon me when my teacher asked the question what is something you want to see changed or fixed in the community. The first thing that came to my mind was the discrimination towards those with more limited abilities. With having an older brother on the autism spectrum, I see how they get belittled through looks and words by both adults and kids. I believe this is not because they intend to come off mean, but because they don't know what the right thing is. My goal is to help show the neuro-typicals' that these kids deserve respect. In order to have the most success getting my point across, my goal is to have videos that are sent to the Southern Hancock Community Schools. Pitch DayPitch day was such a cool experience with this project. I am so passionate about discrimination towards those with disabilities, and to be able to share how I want to fix this just made me proud. Everyone was so eager to hear. We got the suggestion of making Disability Awareness Week a big series of videos by the principal. We are so excited to get started and working on this. The videosIn order to accomplish this, I have talked to the resource teacher in the school, and she has helped me figure out the best way to promote this will be through videos. In each video, I along with Kendall Mann and Lucy miller, plan to interview different students, who have more limited abilities, and get to know them through a series of questions followed by asking them how they want to be treated. We are hoping to do this through asking questions such as, "If a fellow student were to come up to you and ask you if they could be your friend, how would you want them to approach you?"
I have already made permission slips to send home with the students. In these I also invited the parents to the interview, if they would like and if their student would talk more if his/her parent was with them. I am currently waiting to get the feedback from those back in order to get started. |
